If you’re a resident of California or a neighboring state, you may have asked yourself this question in light of the recent Supreme Court decision. Here’s what you need to know about how the reversal of Roe vs. Wade affects women’s access to abortion in California.

How Does the Reversal of Roe vs. Wade Affect California?

On June 24, 2022 The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, passing the authority to regulate abortion back to the states and their elected representatives. As a result, each state now has the authority to decide if and when abortions can be performed.

In California, abortion remains fully legal, meaning that essentially nothing has changed.

Types of Abortions Allowed

The attorney general states that elective abortions, including medical and surgical, will remain legal in California up until the pregnancy is viable. This is usually around 20-24 weeks. After the stage of viability is achieved, abortions may still be performed if the life of the mother is at risk.

Advocating for Your Health

If you are experiencing an unintended pregnancy, you may be searching for a quick solution. According to the Mayo Clinic, 10-20% of all pregnancies will end in a natural miscarriage. This means there is a chance that your pregnancy will pass on its own.

Some pregnancies implant and grow outside of the uterus. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy. Without detection via ultrasound, an ectopic pregnancy can cause serious and even fatal health complications.

The Open Arms Pregnancy Clinic is not an abortion provider but we offer no-cost ultrasound exams to determine if the pregnancy may be a failed pregnancy that is likely to end naturally or even an ectopic pregnancy that would require immediate medical intervention.  This is an important step before making a termination plan and will help ensure your physical wellbeing and the wellbeing of future pregnancies you may want to have.
