In the days and weeks following the reversal of Roe v. Wade, a tidal wave of misinformation seems to be sweeping the nation. With something as important as women’s healthcare, it is critical to get the facts straight.
With this article, our hope is to simply provide updated information on how abortion laws in America are shifting.
Is Abortion Illegal Now?
The Supreme Court’s removal of Roe v. Wade did not make abortion illegal in all 50 states. The ruling stated that the Constitution does not provide women the right to abortion.
Each state now has the responsibility to create laws regarding how abortion will be handled in that state.
Can Women Still Get An Abortion In California?
Yes. Abortions in the state of California will essentially be unaffected by the overturning of Roe. Lawmakers in California have made it abundantly clear that a pregnancy may be terminated up to the stage of viability which is reached around 21-24 weeks.
Abortion may be performed later in the pregnancy if the health of the mother is in jeopardy.
Ectopic Pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants and begins to develop outside of the uterus. This type of pregnancy is not viable, and if the pregnancy reaches a certain size it may spontaneously rupture which is very dangerous for the woman.
In the case of an ectopic pregnancy, the embryo is removed to save a mother’s life so that both lives are not lost. This treatment is considered to be life-saving and is not prevented by any current law restricting abortion.
Maternal Priority
As stated above, women experiencing life-threatening circumstances will have the option of abortion available. While these situations will be rare, they do happen.
Imagine a woman is 20 weeks pregnant and discovers she has cancer. Chemotherapy may or may not be compatible with pregnancy. A high-risk Obstetrician and an Oncologist will advise a woman in this instance regarding whether or not her pregnancy can be saved or if it would jeopardize her wellbeing.
